Data and privacy
The data Breakly stores, the Shopify permissions it asks for and why, how it handles GDPR requests, and what happens to your data when you uninstall.
Breakly stores what it needs to run your offers and count the orders it discounted. It stores no customer names, emails, phone numbers or addresses.
What Breakly stores#
| Data | What it holds | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Store record | Your store's myshopify domain, currency, time zone, plan, design settings, the ID of the Breakly discount, whether you hid the setup checklist, which scheduled offers are running, and install and uninstall dates. | To run the app for your store. |
| Offers | Everything you set in an offer: name, status, product, collection and excluded product IDs, tiers, texts, translations, checkout messages, countries and schedule. Also overlap notes and the result of the last update. | To show and apply your offers. |
| Product links | Which product uses which offer, and a fingerprint of the offer data last written to it. | To update only the products that changed. |
| Counted orders | For each order Breakly discounted: the order ID and name (such as #1001), creation date, month, currency, order total, Breakly's discount and the offers used. Per offer and tier: the tier, items, discount and sales. | Analytics, the CSV export and your plan usage. |
| Monthly totals | The number of all orders in a month and their total sales. | The share of discounted orders and the average order value without a quantity break. |
| Webhook log | The IDs of the notifications Shopify sent. | So a repeated notification isn't counted twice. |
| Sessions | The access token Shopify gives Breakly for your store, and the permissions you granted. | To call Shopify's Admin API for your store. |
When Breakly reads an order, it reads the order's name, date, total, discounts and the product, variant, quantity and price of its line items. It doesn't read customer fields.
What Breakly writes to your store#
| Where | What |
|---|---|
| Products | Two metafields per product in an offer: Breakly quantity rules and Breakly widget. You can see them in your Shopify admin, but only Breakly can change them. |
| App settings | Your design settings and your store-wide offer, saved with the app installation. |
| Discounts | One automatic discount, Breakly quantity breaks, with the settings the checkout needs. |
| Theme | Nothing, until you turn on the Auto placement app embed or add the Quantity breaks block in the theme editor. |
Permissions Breakly asks for#
| Permission | Why Breakly needs it |
|---|---|
Read products (read_products) |
To pick products and collections, list the products in a collection, show the preview and run Price check. |
Write products (write_products) |
To write the offer data on each product that the widget and the checkout discount read. |
Write discounts (write_discounts) |
To create and update the Breakly automatic discount. |
Read orders (read_orders) |
To count the orders Breakly discounted, for Analytics and your plan. Shopify shares the last 60 days of orders. |
Read markets (read_markets) |
To list your markets' currencies in Price check. |
Breakly also reads your store's currency, time zone and shipping countries, and the status of your Breakly plan.
Shopify notifications Breakly listens to#
| Notification | What Breakly does |
|---|---|
| Product created, updated or deleted | Updates or removes that product's offer data. |
| Collection updated or deleted | Updates the products of collection offers that use it. |
| Order created | Counts the order when Breakly's discount applied. |
| App permissions changed | Saves the new permissions. |
| App uninstalled | See When you uninstall. |
GDPR and privacy requests#
Shopify sends Breakly the mandatory privacy requests. Breakly handles them like this:
| Request | What Breakly does |
|---|---|
Customer data request (customers/data_request) |
Breakly stores no customer fields. It looks up how many counted orders belong to the request and logs that number. The order details are in your Shopify admin and in Analytics > Export CSV. |
Customer erasure (customers/redact) |
Deletes the counted orders listed in the request, with their tier details. |
Store erasure (shop/redact) |
Deletes all data Breakly holds for your store: offers, product links, counted orders, monthly totals, the webhook log, the store record and sessions. |
When you uninstall#
- Shopify removes the widget from your theme and stops Breakly's discount, so nothing keeps discounting after you uninstall.
- Breakly deletes your store's sessions and product links right away, and marks your store as uninstalled.
- Breakly keeps your offers, design settings and counted orders until Shopify asks it to erase your store's data, about 48 hours after you uninstall. Breakly then deletes all of it.
If you reinstall before then, your offers are still there. Breakly creates its discount again and writes your offers to your products.
